Greetings from the Canadian prairie. I wonder if there is anyone who would be interested in doing a book club group? Could be a book choice every month, maybe with a rural or small-town theme or maybe with a different theme each month. Members could take turns choosing a book, and meet online to chat about it and discuss other good reads.
I have a personal weakness for light-hearted British fiction. Stuff like Katie Fforde, Rosamund Pilcher, Jill Mansell, Catherine Alliott, that kind of thing but I am always looking for new authors and books to read.

If there is already a group like this, I would love to know. I would also be happy to help facilitate a group to get it started.
Thanks, and I look forward to a little bookish escapism.

After reading the captions on all three I think I'll vote for Just For Christmas.

Ok, lets vote on one of the books suggested as December is very near.
1. A Christmas Homecoming
2. The Christmas Basket
3. Just For Christmas

It doesn't have to be a holiday book! That was just a suggestion. You can nominate any book you'd like. :)

I cannot think of a holiday book to recommend. I will put in my vote when the time comes.

Another idea would to have a moderator pick a theme for each month's book club. For example, we can do holidays for December. Anything holiday or winter themed could be suggested. :)

Great suggestion, Kiersten! I will suggest A Christmas Homecoming by Anne Perry, which is a Victorian era mystery. Then once everyone makes a suggestion we could vote on the one everyone wants to read, if that is agreeable.

I'm interested! I enjoy historical fiction but I'm open to reading any genre. Maybe we should have people recommend books and then have a poll to choose which one to read?

Hey farm girls! I am actually still around and would love to continue being in the book club if others are keen. The idea when I started the thread was that I could kick it off but then everyone who is participating takes it in turns to suggest a book and sort of guide discussion...I think we just ran out of steam. But if there is enough interest it could be revived for winter! :)

Okay, what does everyone like to read: I like mysteries.

The farmgirl who started this thread hasn't been around to run this. Go ahead and reorganize this one either here or on a new thread. I would like to see this started up again for the winter.

I read The Mermaid's Sister, and enjoyed it. I think it was an interesting mix of being somewhat predictable and totally surprising and creative at the same time. It was very quick read. Has anyone else read it?

I am sorry I must back out of the book club. I do plan to read "The Mermaid's Sister". It sounds like a wonderful pick! However, family requires more of my attention for now.

I just finished reading The Mermaid's Sister. Such a wonderful book full of gentle magic. I believe the main lesson of this story is that it is never right to tell a lie even if its purpose is to make someone feel better.

Here it is. I've requested a copy from our library, and hopefully it will come soon. I like reading YA books once in awhile, there is something purely open about them. Can't wait to get started!

The Mermaid's Sister
by Carrie Anne Noble

2014 Winner — Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award — Young Adult Fiction

There is no cure for being who you truly are...

In a cottage high atop Llanfair Mountain, sixteen-year-old Clara lives with her sister, Maren, and guardian Auntie. By day, they gather herbs for Auntie’s healing potions. By night, Auntie spins tales of faraway lands and wicked fairies. Clara’s favorite story tells of three orphan infants—Clara, who was brought to Auntie by a stork; Maren, who arrived in a seashell; and their best friend, O’Neill, who was found beneath an apple tree.

One day, Clara discovers shimmering scales just beneath her sister’s skin. She realizes that Maren is becoming a mermaid—and knows that no mermaid can survive on land. Desperate to save her, Clara and O’Neill place the mermaid-girl in their gypsy wagon and set out for the sea. But no road is straight, and the trio encounters trouble around every bend. Ensnared by an evil troupe of traveling performers, Clara and O’Neill must find a way to save themselves and the ever-weakening mermaid.

And always, in the back of her mind, Clara wonders, if my sister is a mermaid, then what am I?
